Hi everyone! As you may or may not know, Denny is turning 60 on August 2!
I realize that 60 years is a long time and Denny is a man who shares a memorable moment with everybody he meets, and not everyone that wants to celebrate with Denny will be able to.
That's why I've decided to set up this blog - so the legions of folks who know and love Denny can share their favorite Denny memory, quirk, or inside joke. So whether you want to remember the good times you two had in medical school, discuss the night you guys brought the house down at a Kirtan show, or thank him for being there for you all of these years, post your favorite Denny-centric material here. That way, Denny can remember all of the wonderful people from the past 60 years for the next 60 years!
Have fun and thanks in advance for making this day special for our favorite Denny.

Dear Denny,
ReplyDeleteWe wish so very much we could have spent this memorable evening with you and Jan and your family.
Please know, that you are always in our hearts. You are the best of friends. Your concern, warmth, devoted friendship, and support is forever appreciated.
I will never forget the first time we met yet again after so many years since we were childhood friends.
There I am, in the Himalayan Institute book store, and there is this bearded guy in a short white medical school coat. I stared at you, and you at me: Denny? Ricky? and there we were after so many years, our paths crossed. We have since been inextricably connected on a path toward spirit and oneness.
I credit you with my exposure to the wonders of homeopathy and healing in a way, that no other physician has done.
Thank you so much for being OUR devoted and loyal friend, confidant, and being on this wonderful path.
We love you.
Rick and Char and Matt, Leah, and Jane
My first memory of Denny is in Manhattan, about three months before we met.
ReplyDeleteIt was the spring of 2003, and I was in the process of falling in love with his son and my future husband, Abe. Early on in the courtship, Abe pointed out a small piece of paper above his bedroom door - it was sketch of an odd, bearded figure seated the lotus position with a third eye. Abe announced, "Someone gave me this because it reminded them of my dad."
To tell the truth, in that moment I wasn't sure what to think. While the tiny illustration was unusual, what was most striking was Abe's voice and expression - he had a huge, adoring grin, and he clearly projected a respect and love unclouded by any of the embarrassment or mixed emotions that often accompanied my peers' introduction of their parents. He went on to proudly tell me his father was an accomplished doctor, published author, patient coach, outstanding athlete, gifted teacher, and someone he deeply admired. My love for Abe grew a lot that day, and months later when I met Denny in person, he immediately opened his heart, life and family to me.
In the years that I've known him, I've seen for myself Denny is everything Abe said, plus a talented musician, dedicated martial artist, intrepid traveler, and loving and supportive father, brother, husband and friend. Happy 60th birthday, Denny - I am looking forward to sharing all good things in our lives for years to come!
Hi wonderful cousin and his awesome family. We really wanted to come to your party however i had committed to volunteer at the Cleveland Breast Cancer 3 day.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories of Denny was when he was very young and had just got his first pair of glasses. A darling curly haired boy with a great smile-- completely adorable Our families were out for dinner
and Denny looked up and said "there's the moon". I said "okay he can see far away and he doesn't need to wear glasses".
Denny has always been someone i could call to talk to about lots of things. He is, to me, gracious, kind, caring, sensitive and very loving and patient. I admire him for his dedication, devotion and spiritual commitment to his family, friends, medical practice and to his principles. Denny I also love how you love my children. You are so very special to me and I love you very much and pray for you to have continued blessings and contentment. Hugs and love. Sherrie and Norman.
Wait a minute…Dennis is turning 60?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone told him?
Are you sure we are talking about the same Dennis? Dennis Chernin?
Are we talking about the guy who sleeps three hours a night, has absolutely no body fat, eats only soy pizzas and burritos and was last seen on the front lawn swinging a twenty pound 18th century sword meant to take the ride out from beneath attacking Japanese warriors? That guy? The one recently spotted dancing wildly by himself at Top Of The Park, & then talking to a homeless guy? The guy who is clearly pretty far along in Borg assimilation, judging by the Blackberry constantly pressed against the side of his head? 60 years old….geez!
OK, I can accept this (hard swallow). It will be an honor to say a few words.
First of all, I have to say that it is a vicious and unsubstantiated rumor that this must mean that I, too, am 60 years old. I deny this, and therefore it must not be true. OK, Enough about me.
I have to say that Dennis is an extraordinary person. I am delighted to have him as a close friend, and to have known him for more than 25 years, shared patients with him and in recent years collaborated musically with him. He is very kind, generous, competitive (oops), incredibly friendly and warm, and smart. I don’t think I’ve come across a more friendly and sincere person in this lifetime. He clearly values friendship and family to an extraordinary degree. There is much to admire in this man, including his sense of humor!
I am really disappointed that I will be away at the time of the birthday celebration, as I would like to have said these words out loud, and to have marveled at how incredibly comfortable he is with all of these complimentary comments. ☺
Happy 60th Dennis, and may there be a 61st birthday as well!
With love,
Glenn Burdick
